It's a karate kid....

So last night Jackson was promoted to Blue belt in karate. He was very excited. I was amazed at how still he sat during the hour long ceremony, criss cross applesauce on the hard floor, riveted by the kata's the higher level belts performed.
Afterwards we all went to Leatherby's Creamery for ice cream. Jack got a banana hot fudge sundae that he really enjoyed. Steven had his usual -a root beer float and Grandma had pie. Papa tried something new.. a coffee ice cream soda -yummy!
I had a 1 scoop sundae with caramel & hot fudge (both homemade and delicious!) and Jonathan had a black & white sundae (his usual also).

As we were leaving the restaurant, a little girl (maybe 4 years old) pointed at Jack and said... 'look mommy it's a karate kid." I had to giggle out loud as it was so cute.

So tomorrow we are off to Manteca for Steven's baseball tournament ==think happy thoughts for the team as they play 4 games Saturday and Sunday. We'll be home Sunday and I'll update whether or not we are going back to the playoffs on Monday.

Right now we are off to dinner with Jonathan's parents.. we are going for Chinese! His dad works on a cruise ship in Hawaii and is leaving to go back tomorrow -so we want to see him one more time!

I can't belive it's Thursday already!

So I have been meaning to blog, but kept getting sidetracked. With the house, selling some things on ebay and just life I guess. So today I thought I would blog about Bento style lunches. The kids love them. I love knowing they are eating things that are good for them. So for us it is a win win situation! These are the bento boxes I bought in San Francisco at the store in Japantown.

First we have Jackson's lunch for today... he has Meatloaf with bbq sauce on the side in the top box, then grapes and vodka noodles in the bottom box and a side box of green pepper strips. He will buy a milk and he is set for lunch!





Steven's lunch is a bit different. He has pork chop strips, with a side of ketchup (in a small contained you can't see in the picture -it blends in) in his top box. Then a cheese stick and carrots in the bottom box (we actually added some crunch breadsticks after i took the picture)
and a side of pears.




This is the bag for carrying the box. Steven uses it everyday -he really likes that it is small and light. This lunch is a decent size amount of food -but it packs up tiny, with no waste -so we are doing our part for the enviroment. He says his friends tease him (good naturedly) about having such a tiny lunch and how can that be enough food. He thinks it is funny, so I think he uses the bag to push their buttons too. The boys both have new Lands End lunchboxes -which they will use when they start using their thermos jars --but right now they don't want hot foods. I can understand that as it is 100+ degrees outside.
This is how Steven's lunch fits in the bag *which is insulated* and then he adds a capri sun to drink.






So what else... both kids brought home fundraiser packets yesterday. Both are selling magazines -so if you need any renewals or magazines let them know and they can give you the prices offered. Some are great deals, others are waaaay overpriced. I told them they do not have to sell anything, but both want to participate -not sure why? It isn't solely the prizes, more that they are motivated to help their school -as the rep from the company told them it would. What a sense of duty those 2 have... feeling responsible for participating.

We are 2 days away from the big tournament! Steven is excited, we are excited. The weather says it will be in the 90s, hopefully there'll be a breeze.

I guess that's it for now.. I must head off to continue working on my house... 7 loads of stuff out.. lots left to go...

Sunday thoughts....

It is Sunday, August 24, 2008...
I am thinking... about how lucky I am to have my mom around. She called Jack after reading his update about his beloved fish (which I must say he posted, entirely by himself, before I got home -phrases & all) today and offered to take him to a movie. This brightened up his whole day and I feel blessed that they can be there for each other like that.
I am thankful for... all the people in my life who are there for me when I have questions or need help. Like my brother who thru 3 phone calls (and if you know Brian, you know phone calls aren't really his thing!) helped me figure out where to take Steven to look at bats, where to find the bat after he decided and how to get a good price for it. It may not seem like a big deal -but these travel team bats are all like $300 and since I don't know anything about them.. I needed his help! Thanks Bri!!!
Today in the kitchen... nada... the boys are at the movies with my mom -so Jon & I had Togo's pastrami sandwiches... it was too hot to cook.
I am going... to have a less busy week! Last week was awfully busy between back to school nights, sports, etc.. I wasn't home 1 night! So this week we just have a couple things.. but I should have a few nights at home .
I am hoping... For good weather this weekend for Steven's tournament. They are playing in Manteca at a Big League Dreams field-which is a scaled down replica of a major league park -artificial turf and all... the boys are so excited, they have been working really hard to get ready for this tournament. Plus our good friend Arden is heading up from Turlock to see Steven play -so that will be great to see him! So, I just need to pack and find a place for River and I'll be all set to go...
Going on around me... Nothing right now.. just waiting for the boys to get home .. I have laundry going and just finished making some calls for my Beauticontrol business.
One of my favorite things... General Hospital --I have been watching off/on since I was 9 years old.. I tivo it every day -right now I have 11 epidsodes to watch to catch up.. so that is what I am doing while waiting for the laundy.

A picture thought I am sharing

Microwave cake! Steven & Jack and their friends Josh & Justin love this cake. It is just cake mix and a can of soda, mix and microwave for 8-10 minutes. It comes out tasting yummy. Friday I made them white cake with sierra mist.. we have done chocolate with dr. pepper, white with rootbeer, white with orange soda ...all yummy and moist.

Sadness by jackson

It is 8:15 and Spike is dead. RIP. I had him 4 the best 6 days ever. (sob sob sob sob). 5 Minutes ago i came downstairs and found him on the ground. I have no idea how it happend but it did. Right now i am crying. Bless his soul!

Jack asked me to post this picture of Spike after we changed his water. He is now swimming and relaxed.... no more stress for the fish.

It's Finally Friday!

It is Friday, August 22nd...

I am thinking... how I am so happy it's the weekend. This week was booked solid -with 2 back to school nights, karate belt test for Jack, State Fair --I was gone EVERY night this week and it shows in my mental & physical health.

I am thankful for... my honey who just walked thru the door with a iced coffee for me!! Friday is the day he goes to Starbucks on his way to work.. they have a promotion right now that if you make a purchase in the morning you get a "treat" receipt.. so you can get any iced drink after 2 p.m. for $2.. so he got me one! I am enjoying every sip.

Today in the kitchen... we are having spaghetti and sausage..easy peasy.

I am going... to baseball practice with Steven later, then nowhere! We have no plans the whole weekend!!! Which is great -next weekend we are in Manteca all weekend for a baseball Tournament at the Field of Dreams park!

I am reading... The Constant Princess by Phillipa Gregory for book club

I am hoping... to get my house decluttered! I have a new plan and a 5 day limit.. I took photos of all the rooms today.. I hope to post the "after" and before pictures next Friday.

I am hearing... BOYS!

Going on around me... Steven & Jackson have Josh & Justin with them downstairs.. they are playing Wii and just LOUD. But the hearing the sound of their laughter is nice -I want them to have fun.

One of my favorite things... relaxing weekends with my family. Lots of quality time, playing games, just hanging out.

Spike By Jackson

On Monday we wnt to the State Fair. At 4:00 I saw a lady with a fish. She said "Do you want this fish. Iwon it and I live out of the area.", so I said yes! I wanted it so badly that I carried him for 5 HOURS!!! I love him SOOOOO much! For the first day I had Spike he stayed at the bottam of the bowl. But today he is less shy. Now he is swimming like it is his origanel home. HE IS AWSEOME!!!!!!!!!!

California State Fair 2008

Monday we headed to the State Fair right after the boys got out of school. It was a great day for the fair -not too hot, just about 90 degrees with a cool breeze. We arrived just before 4 p.m. so we got FREE parking! This is the first year the fair is open on Mondays besides Labor Day so they offered the free parking and entry for $5 before 5 p.m. as the way to get people in. It wasn't too busy -which was great, since I hate crowds!

Once there we headed over to the Farm area.. Steven & I got passports and walked the stations to get them stamped (like a scavenger hunt) and the prize is a piece of fresh fruit (I got green apple, he got red) and bag of carrots. Jonathan & Jackson walked around looking at the plants and animals .. then we all sat in the shade and Jackson had the carrots while we ate the fruit -I shared mine with Jonathan.

Then off to milk a goat! Steven thought this was so cool. He was 2nd to milk the goat and got to do it for about 3 minutes. The petting zoo was next, right next door. Steven walked from animal to animal petting them all, bending down to give a quick pet to those who were resting and I think he touched every animal in there. Jackson doesn't care for the petting zoo too much -but the allure of a kangaroo *(he says, we think it might have been a wallabee?) got him in there. He gave a quick, tentative pet and then he was back out.

We saw a dog chase & catch a frisbee, beautiful flower pots, the Hollywood exhibit and had a funnel cake. Jackson took the funnel cake and although I am not real pleased with the look on my face, I wanted to include it.

Then we had dinner at the English Pub stand.. fish & chips for all my guys and bangers & mash for me. Yummy!

Then we saw Weird Al in concert -which was fantastic!!!! It is always a great show, very enjoyable. We were home by 10:30 p.m. and then off to bed --the boys had school the next day...

A great trip to the fair.... I'm glad it's over!

The weekend....

It is Sunday, August 17th at almost 8 p.m....

I am thinking...how I can't wait to go to bed! I am exhausted. In case you don't know I am a consultant for BeautiControl. I do home spa parties and sell skin care/spa products. The company is an industry leader in anti-aging products (of which I am a HUGE fan!!). So I am working on building my business and trying to branch out so my friend and I signed up to do 2 vendor fairs.. both were this weekend! So we were gone 730-5 yesterday and 730-3 today. Today was so slow we packed up 3 hours early to go home & spend time with our families. Overall I think it was worth it.. I got some leads, made a few sales and won a raffle of 2 lbs of great coffee (from a local coffee shop) plus $8 gift certificate to the coffee shop -which we stopped and enjoyed on the way home. Part of my reasons for building the business is so I don't have to go back to work full time. Costs are rising, kids are expensive and our money doesn't go as far as it did. So I am working to expand my mystery shopping company and BeautiControl -both of which I enjoy.... so it's all good. Plus right now BC is offering a FREE cruise to the bahamas as the incentive to build -and I want to earn that!

I am thankful for... having a husband who helps

Today in the kitchen... we had spaghetti w/vodka sauce and chicken parmesan (I made extra chicken last week and froze it so we could enjoy it twice!)

I am going... to see Weird Al Yankovich at the state fair tomorrow. We are all excited about it and looking forward to a fun family day (after school & work).

I am reading... nothing right now, but I have a few books to start

I am hoping... that my spa's this week are successful and help me towards earning my cruise

I am hearing... the olympics.. on that note.. I stayed up long enough last night to hear that Michael Phelps won the 8th gold! I was excited, but so tired. Jonathan was so sweet, he tivo'd it for me, then watched it over again with me today. I was so emotional watching it, I'll admit I cried. It moved me to tears when they showed Michaels reaction to the win, how his first reactionw as to say thank you to his team-mates. I am so impressed with him as both an athlete and a person. He seems so good natured, considerate and thoughtful. Then he broke thru the crowd of reporters to kiss his mom & sisters and give his mother the roses... so touching. It is good to know there are still great people out there and some athletes are willing to act like role models for the kids that admire them.

Going on around me...the boys & I ran to Target and stopped for a frozen yogurt at a new shop.. super yummy! I had lemon and was delicious. We just got back and now they are getting ready for be and their things set for school.

One of my favorite things... gotta finish up so I can go read The Babe and Me with Jackson -we are doing read-aloud chapters every night. I love the time to read, talk and discuss with him. Plus it is a totally fun book.
Since I blogged last.... Friday night was fun! We had Brian, Logan & Ciera for dinner. The boys then watched the Titans (Brian) and Raiders (Jon, Steven) play preseason... apparently Steven & Logan watched some of the game, but Jack was upstairs watching Grease (his current favorite movie). Ciera and I headed out and got pedicures (I have a picture, but do you really want to see our feet? If so, comment and I'll add it) then stopped for frozen yogurt (same shop referenced above) and then hit Kohls. I had a return then we found a few things she liked, so I couldn't resist. I love girl clothes... We had a great time just hanging out, talking and even being quiet.

HAPPY GREEN SMOOTHIE DAY!

Today is International Green Smoothie day. I know it looks gross and I've raved about them before but I wanted to share again. I know several friends have tried them with mixed results. All positive reactions once the recipe kinks were ironed out. If you haven't tried them --just do it! They taste great and are good for you too. The boys & I have one everyday.

You won’t believe how much green food it has in it: chlorophyll and a powerhouse of enzymes, vitamins, and minerals. Unlike a juicer (which makes such a mess and throws away much of the plant), green smoothie is packed with insoluble plant fiber capable of carrying many times its own weight in toxins out of the body. Drinking a quart a day addresses what I believe is the #1 deficit in the American diet: lack of leafy greens. (And I am NOT talking about iceberg lettuce, an essentially nutrition-free food.) A close second deficit is lack of overall plant fiber in the diet, but eating green smoothies addresses that, too.

So Cheers! I type this as I sip my smoothie for today.....

Comparison

I know I blogged these first day of school pictures already... but Steven and I were looking at other pictures and found this one from last year -taken in the same spot and after showing Jackson -we decided we should share them side by side like this.

Wow -what a difference a year makes! Look how much Jack has grown and changed... Steven not as much but still different in so many ways. I always wanted to be that parent who marks in pencil on the wall how tall they are -but alas, I never did it. I guess in my own way I did it -having them take their picture in the same spot before school on the first day.. in fact I wonder if there is a similar picture from 2006? I will go look and add it if there is one.....hmmm.

So today is day 4 of school. It is estimated that the temp is going to hit 106, so I drove Jackson to school as he was really overheated when he got home yesterday (and it was only 103) after PE last and then riding the almost mile home. Another day where Jackson was up, showered and dressed by 6:30 a.m. We had green smoothies for breakfast and he was at school as they started letting kids on the blacktop at 8:15 a.m.

So yesterday I blogged and cleaned a bit. I did some work on the computer for Service Evaluations and BeautiControl. But even inside it was hot and hard to be motivated. Today I have the air blasting and I am hoping to get a bunch done before noon (when it gets really hot). Tonight we are having meatball sandwiches (and the meatballs are already in the crockpot cooking) so I don't have to heat up the house more than it already will be.

Well I am off to clean.... I am going to try to finish the San Francisco posts today... only the Aquarium is left I think..... Have a wonderful day!

Sadness in San Francisco... Part 5

So on Wednesday night we went to Chinatown. I didn't take my camera with me and I do regret it -there were lots of great photo ops that I missed. We did some shopping.. Jackson got new sunglasses from a street vendor, Steven purchased a buddha and a double dragon figurine (I will have to add a photo when he gets home). We walked all around trying to decide where to eat. I asked a worker in the market where Steven made his purchases and he directed me down the hill to Kearny & Commercial... so off we walked down a big hill, and we couldn't located the restaurant he said. Mainly because I didn't really understand what he said, but figured since he gave the street names that we could find it. My bad.

So on the way back up the hill Jack got a text from his friends and said he would reply when we got to where we were eating. His phone was in a case, hooked to his belt. We finished walking up the steep hill, turned and went down a street and down another hill... and at that point he realized his phone case was gone! He was super upset. We re-traced our steps. I wasn't worried, he had it less than 4 minutes before.. but nothing... it was nowhere to be found. I immediately sent a text to the phone asking that if found they call me. No one called. Within the hour the phone was going straight to voicemail so it had either been turned off, or the sim card had been removed as the battery was fully charged.

So after he retraced his steps again with his dad, Jack got really quiet. We tried to explain to him that this wasn't his fault. We knew he hadn't been irresponsible and we would replace the phone. It was truly a heartbreaking experience for me as a parent. It is easy to say tough luck when the kid is irresponsible, but when it is truly an accident ... so painful to watch.

So we have to go to the Sprint store and see about replacing his phone .. probably Friday. Luckily we have insurance on his phone.. so we just have to pay the deductible. It's been a week now and every day he mentions how he misses his phone. He wonders what happened to it. Why would someone take it? Why wasn't it still there minutes later? Mean people suck.

San Francisco.. Part 4

I know it is taking me forever to cover everything we did on our trip...it brings up another good thought to share. I blog to share our lives with all of you that we love! An added benefit is that at the end of the year I can have the posts turned into a book -giving me a detailed history of our year. I love this idea and so I sometimes wan to capture every detail -good or bad.

That said, please know that when I posted on Monday that I was upset and my husband laughed --apparently that came out in a way that made him sound not very nice. I want to clarify (but how many of you go back to previous posts looking for edits??) that once he realized I was upset, he was very compassionate and did try to make me feel better. He is a good guy and I know he loves me. I think sometimes my emotions catch him waaaaay off guard.

Ok back to San Francisco... I found that I had horrible hair days in the city. The wet air did not do well for my hair and even though I started the trip saying that I wanted pictures taken of me to prove I was there - I hid from almost every picture because of my bad hair. Jonathan did get one of the boys and I at the Exploratorium. Here I am in my first picture since I started losing weight.. I am down about 19 pounds now and working on more. So the thing about the Exploratorium is that you have to be a patient soul interested in science to enjoy it. Which means, I was out of my element but my guys (all 3 of them) had a great time! They went from experience to experience trying everything, asking Jon to clarify things. We spent a little more than 2 hours there because we didn't eat before going.. I think if we had eaten already they would have all been willing to stay 5 hours or more. We skipped over some things and I admit I rushed them at the end becuase our parking time was up and I was hungry. While I didn't enjoy most of the "learning" experiences, I did enjoy watching the boys and their excitement over it. It made me wish I liked science, but really? I don't.

San Francisco... Part 3 Japantown

We visited Japantown Center. Since we had already had breakfast.. at a diner where the prices were high and the food was just ok.. we had to walk past the ice cream crepes and the sushi and the noodle places wondering what how they would taste. The center has changed alot since I was there last (over 20 years since I lived in SF) and I liked the results. There were lots of authentic Japanese details throughout the center -like the blossoms & waterfall where Steven stood for the picture below.

We went to Japantown because I am fascinated by Bento boxes. Used in Japan to transport lunches, there is an internet craze going on where people make "regular" lunches in the boxes.. but are able to use fresh ingredients, smaller sizes and more balanced lunches than just a sandwich & apple. I have been making these style lunches for the boys for a few months, but I wanted the actual boxes and accessories (which I am sure will pop up in another blog post soon...).

So off we went to Ichiban Kan. I loved that store. I got tons of bento stuff -including rice molds, rice seasoning, a sushi maker (for veggie sushi) seaweed wrappers, roasted peas, spicy noodle snack, pocky and miso sauce as well as a 5 lb bag of great rice. I spent over an hour browsing thru everything in the store.. but it made me very happy. $88 later and out the door we went. I picked up sauce containers, insulated lunch carriers as well as the bento boxes themselves. We have used them for 2 days and the boys say it is enough food and easy to use.. they like the ease of it.

I love that Steven was in a good mood that morning ... he posed for all the pictures without any hesitation, in fact the girl and blossoms pictures I didn't even ask -he just did them!

Well Steven just got home from a 1 hour baseball practice that lasted over 2 hours, so I need to make sure he is getting ready for bed. I was devestated when I got home and checked the score that the Giants lost 12-4 .. when I left after the 4th they were tied and all was well. I guess Lincecum got hurt right after we left for practice -but I can't find any info on it.. I'll have to look again later.......

San Francisco.. Part 2

We stayed at Hotel 480 which is right off Union Square. It was bustling and busy most of the time.. we saw lots of people every time we walked thru the square. There are these great art hearts - with local artist designs. I couldn't resist having the boys pose by this one --as it really represents the heart of SF! Notice the sweatshirts we had to buy at Walgreens as my kids came to the city in shorts/t-shirts with no jackets -even though I warned them it would be cooler there. It was 64 degrees at the high and foggy in the mornings..... This was on our way to the cable car!

San Francisco... Part 1

So it's Tuesday and I am finally done with my pictures from the trip. It is hard to wade thru 200+ shots and get them ready to use.. so I am going to just share my favorites!

School update: Steven left a few minutes later than he planned & I noticed his lunch still on the counter -oh well, hopefully he has his lunch card with him to buy lunch, if not I expect I'll get a phone call. Jackson left at 7:59 a.m. for school -which starts at 8:30 a.m. He was anxious to get there and have his bike locked up by 8:15 so he could be first in line and visit with his friends. Very different than years past, when I was pulling him out of bed (physically) at 8:10 to get him there by 8:30 (usually!).

We dropped River off at my friend Suzie's at 9 a.m. so he could have a sleepover with Luke (her dog). I will probably forget this at the end so I will tell you right now -my dog came home more tired than he has ever been. He literally slept for an entire day with very little movement or excitement -he was exhausted from the playing & running they did. I hear Luke was the same way...

So we got on the road by 9:30 ... made a stop for a snack & bathroom break at McDonalds where we all had an early lunch instead (at 10:30 a.m.). We were headed over the Bay Bridge at 11 and headed to the parking garage by our hotel at Union Square. We dropped off the car then got on the Muni Train and took it to the stadium. We picked up our tickets from will call (long line) and got to our seats just as the 2nd inning started.. the score was already Giants 1 Braves 0. We hate to be late for the games, but it was important to me that we only pay $25 to park once, not twice. So we missed a bit, but settled right in. I guess what we missed was a home run. That bummed me out a bit. So, 2 of my 3 favorite players were in that day: Tim Lincecum and Bengie Molina. I was psyched to see them play in person. However I have decided I really prefer to watch them on tv.. I like the close-ups alot. Omar Vizquel was not playing... but I have seen him play live before.


So here is a shot I got of Timmy pitching... I love watching his routine and seeing him throw the ball. I look forward to years of watching him play! He is only 24, so should be around quite a while, God willing.









Here is a shot I got of Bengie at the plate -it was one of the only times he turned around.... but I got one. He is an amazing catcher. I really admire his stamina and skill behind the plate....





Then we got to see our closer, Brian Wilson. I like him too. I always giggle at the end of games we win at the sign he makes... well we won (3-2) and I got a picture of it.. of course he wasn't facing me -but that makes no difference!!!! First day of School

Well today was the end of summer... the boys went back to school! We took a trip to San Francisco (coming in future blog posts, hopefully tomorrow) the end of last week, then relaxed at home for the weekend to get ready.

Steven is in 7th grade. He came home pleased with his first day. Teachers are good.. he has his first male teacher (besides PE) for 2 classes and says he thinks he's the best teacher he has. He was excited to find out that Life Skills (his "exploratory" class) will focus on more than last year .. last year it was just all about self-esteem and peer pressure -this week that will be 2 days a week and cooking will be the other days. He is thrilled! I am excited for him to learn to cook more. He participated in a cooking club the end of last year and really enjoyed using the cooking lab and the experiences. He just finished his homework -2 classes assigned homework on the first day of school .

Jackson is in 4th grade. He was excited to go. He had a good day. I got a report from a friend that when she dropped her daughter off he was surrounded by girls, talking and smiling. Why wasn't I there you ask? Well, here's what happened. Jack asked me to drive him today and he will start riding his bike tomorrow. So I ask: am I dropping you off or parking and walking in? He says parking. So we go around the block to get a space and someone took the space before I got there -so we needed to go around the block again (still 20 minutes before school starts) and as I stopped at the stop sign to turn.. he said "no, actually Mom I'll just get out here" and he jumped out of the car and was across the street before I realized what had just happened. I was devestated. I called Jonathan (who laughed at the situation) and then I lost it. My friend Lori called right then, could tell I was crying and talked me down... I guess I just didn't expect him to grow up so fast and to not need me. It was sad for me. Anyway -he had a great time, got to pick his own seat, got his own Student Planner for the first time and is excited to go back tomorrow. The one bad thing -I tightened his thermos too much and he couldn't get it open at lunch so he couldn't eat his soup -so he just had green pepper slices and cucmbers for lunch.

















After school we went to Baskin Robbins. The boys each enjoyed a celebratory sundae and I had a kids cone. It was super yummy - Jamoca Orea ice cream!!!

Summer Fun
